QUOTE: The Bedroom is Yours

image: Marie Claire Maison Magazine

"You may concentrate on appearances all through the rest of your house, but in the bedroom comfort should be supreme. I think that bedrooms should also be very intimate rooms-they should express your personal preferences in every way.... Of all the rooms in the house your bedroom is yours."
Dorothy Draper, In the Pink

This bedroom is so dreamy.
I have been pulling my new bedroom together so I thought I would post on such a personal space.  I hope to have before and after photos up soon.  Just been busy, the plumber just left... getting quotes for gutting the bathroom.  More on that later, back to the bedroom!
I should be done within the next few weeks....I love the pretty bedroom above my walls are a grey similar to the canopy fabric making the room moody and dreamy.  I hope my bedroom is a cosy looking as this image and that the bedroom rates supreme in Dorothy Drapers book.

What is the one object/item you must have in your bedroom to create the ultimate cosy, personal spot to make it yours? Mine is luxury linens and fabulous natural light pouring in.

OBSESSION: Everything in Life!

this image cracks me up!
Yes, I will be riding my bike with strapy high heels and hose with garters!!!

I have been obsessing over everything; new draperies, new furniture, tile, design, and the list goes on and on.... I have also been obsessing over the walk to the train and me missing my train which now comes every hour in the morning instead of the "L" every 4 to 10 minutes, so if I miss a train I have to sit and wait for an hour at the great little coffee shop. Nice but it makes me late for work.  I decided that I need a bike so I don't dilly dally walk to the train in beautiful weather (takes about 20 minutes to walk)

Hopefully, I will be buying a bike today!! Can't wait to go look at them.

DESIGN: Winging it!!

I have had such a busy week and the end will be in sight soon.  My mum and I have cleaned, scoured and scrubbed almost every dirty inch of this house.  It took a day in a half to scrub down the kitchen (can I say gross!!    I had to climb inside the bottom cabinet to scrub out mystery stains that took almost 2 hours! my neck was killing me)

We have selected the paint colours for all the rooms {Look for those posts once rooms are painted}

The bedroom is a moody grey with a white trim and base.   Now I need to go buy a new headboard and bedding for my new custom built mattress, can I just say I love my new bed.  I will post images of the progress and the complete room soon.  I need a new chair to place by the window and found these lovely wing chairs.

CH445 Wing Chair by Hans J Wegner
I love this chair with its "Jetson" look.
Who wouldn't want a Hans Wegner Chair to add to a collection of wonderful furniture pieces,
can I also add that I want the Wish Bone Chairs too!!! *sigh*
My very good friend Sandy Rempe works for Steelcase and sells his wonderful pieces,
so I hope to buy a piece or two from her {once I save up the money!!!}

I think this chair would be perfect for my new house,

I am having a wonderful time with my mum.  The house is coming along slowly but it is shaping up. Now I just need to start buying furniture.  I need to finish up the bedroom with a chair, a night stand and place mirrors and artwork.  Hope to have complete within the next few weeks.

I have missed you all and hope to catch up on reading my favorites blogs and leaving comments. It feels good to be back.  Enjoy today!
and please let me know
which is your favorite wing chair??

PHOTOGRAPHER: Screens of Italy

Via di San Giuseppi II

Matthew Tischler
photographer

I was reading through a few of my favorite blogs last night and came across this photography via Lil Bee.  I went to Matthew Tischler's site and was completely amazed with his traditionally shot photos printed from negatives, NOT digitally enhance or manipulated.  He shoots his subject through a layer of screen, fabric or material. The effect is amazing dark and moody with a lovely sense of the past. View his "screen series" posted on Lil Bee.

I fell head over heels for his "Italy Series", hope you enjoy his work:
Via Dell'Agnolo (my favorite!)
Via Di Bardi

Via Dei Belluti I  (another favorite!!)

Via Maggio

via del Corsol

They are ghostly, with a sense of past that is amazingly beautiful. The subjects are mysterious and unknown walking behind the screens.
Please view more of his work and enjoy the beauty he has captured.

OBSESSION: Lilacs

When I bought my home it was not yet spring.... all the plants were bare and brown.  I had no idea what I was in for until spring arrived. This is the view out of my new bedroom window back in March......
Well, now that it is spring... I am completely giddy!
That bare tree was actually a Lilac Bush!!!  Look how pretty all the floral branches are, and they smell heavenly! mmmmmm. so sweet and heady!
AND, there's more prettiness.... below the lilac bush is a huge patch of Lily of the Valleys, *sigh* and the lawn is now over grown with wild violets, you can't even see the grass anymore!!! oh, and I have tons of weeds!  I will be spending many hours trying to get the back yard into shape.  I promise to post my progress... I am sure it will take all summer to get the back yard into shape. I would love to plant a herb garden with a few vegetables.
     and of course more flowers!

I am so happy with the lilacs!!! I may plant a few more along the fence. eeeeee, I am sooooo very happy!
What do you think of lilacs?

DESIGN: Living Room

it's starting to come together......
Some of you have requested to see what is going on in my new house..... Well, here are some sneak peaks of the Living Room!  Before and After, I had the carpet removed and the hardwood flooring refinished........
This photo shows the before living room and entry way.  See that nasty carpet on the floor, and the previous owners old furniture.
Here is the living room with the light coming in from the open front door. Doesn't the hardwood flooring look fantastic. {now the walls need to be painting badly!}
      any suggestions on colours???
Here is another before photo of the living room with the nasty carpet {seriously, this carpet was from the 60's, completely nasty!!}  Also, the drapery was very dated and dusty!!!

Here is the living room now! The flooring is finished in provincial brown, love it!  I am loving all the natural light that comes in the windows.  I need to remove all the old hardware and I will need to select some pretty drapery, something simple and light. I will need to select wall colour, base and window trim colour and find an amazing area rug!!!
This image is from the Livingetc magazine for May 2009, Joy and Lucien's home in South Africa, preview their home here.  I fell in love with their sofa, well really their entire home! I am all for the slip cover for easy cleaning, plus I adore white sofa's and having a dog it is best to have slip covers for easy clean up!!
image: Livingetc
This sofa below is from Pottery Barn, it's the closest I have come to finding the sofa from Living etc. I hope to order this soon, just want to go in and sit on the sofa before I buy.....         .... just to make sure is it cosy!!!

I will be posting more photos as I start putting the room together.  I will be painting next week, and hope to have some furniture... that is if I can get out to do some shopping since I don't have much furniture at the moment.  Keep your fingers crossed that the sofa lead time is not to long!!
I really don't want to wait 6 to 8 weeks.

Also, if any of you have any idea's on area rugs and wall paint colour, please suggest away:) would love to hear your suggestions.

Hope you all have a wonderful Monday!!

One of my favorite flowers is the magnolia flower.
I just adore the sweet colours and softness of the delicate looking flower.  When I see trees in bloom, a huge smile spreads across my face. They are just pure happiness!
