DOROTHY DRAPER Born to a wealthy and privileged family in 1889. She was the first to professionalize the interior design industry by establishing the first interior design company in the United States in 1923. Inventing the style "Modern Baroque" she created public spaces that elevated the presence of great beauty. Her use vibrant splashes of colour in amazing combinations such as aubergine and pink with a bit of chartreuse and a touch of turquoise blue is one of my favorites. Her use of flat white with shiny black is another palette that gets my inspiration juices flowing with possibilities.
She was Americans leading trendsetter. She was bold and she was glamorous!

Just remember the elements of Draperism:
- Intense colour
- Plant life
- Dense, textured carpet
- Striking details
- A roaring fire
- Exuberant prints
Next week, I will be posting current designers who use these elements.
